Breast Cancer Awareness, Understanding, Screening, Survivor Support and Empowerment CBRP Project

The overarching goal of this community-based participatory research project is to reduce breast cancer mortality among women in Milwaukee County. The target population for this research project is African immigrants and refugees living in Milwaukee County. During the course of the project efforts will be undertaken to assess the culture, health care priorities, the breast health concerns, health care resources, and the health care and breast health needs of African immigrant and refugee women. Data collected through interviews, focus groups will be collected, transcribed, analyzed and used to identify cultural, religious, social nuances of local subgroups of African immigrant and refugee women; identify health care priorities and health care needs of local African immigrant and refugee women.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Prior to participating in this project students will complete readings on qualitative methodologies and complete an online Human Subjects Protection Training Module. Afterwards, they will assist the transcription, review analysis of interview and focus group data specific to the health needs and concerns of African immigrant women and develop an evidence table of related literature. Selected students will be afforded an opportunity to work along-side nurse specialists in the implementation of an educational breast health protocol.
