Genetic Studies to Understand How Bacteria Move over Surfaces

Bacterial mutants with defects in ability to crawl over surfaces will be analyzed using genetic, molecular biological, and microscopic techniques in order to understand the mechanism of cell movement and the nature of the 'motors' that propel the cells.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Students will grow the bacterial mutants and analyze their motility behavior using techniques of microbiology and microscopy. Individual genes and proteins involved in movement will be studied using molecular biological techniques such as cloning of DNA and gel electrophoresis of proteins among others.
