Entry to locked vehicles on the rise around UWM and at U-parks
The UWM Police Department would like to remind you to hide or remove all your valuables from your vehicles to help prevent break-ins. GPS (Global Positioning Systems) units are being targeted by thieves. The units range in price from $100-$1000. They are small, easy to remove and easy to conceal. It's no surprise that criminals would target them. The UWM Police Department asks that you consider the following tips to prevent a vehicle break-in. · Consider switching to a friction mount instead of the suction-cup windshield mount most GPS devices ship with. Friction mounts rest on the dashboard instead being attached to the glass, and can be easily hidden under the seat when the car is parked. Plus, there's no revealing ring on the windshield to tip off thieves. · If you do use a windshield mount, remove it when parking the car and wipe off the mark left by the suction cup. ·
Write down the serial number of your GPS and register it with the manufacturer. That way, if it ever goes missing you can prove the unit was yours. · If your GPS includes a lock/password feature, use it. · Take your GPS with you instead of leaving is in your glove compartment or center console. Minimally, hide or cover all valuables- purse, CD's etc. Remove the faceplate of your radio/CD player. Better to move them into the trunk. Better yet – remove them from your car and take them with you.
