Metro Milwaukee Green Initiative

UW-Milwaukee has signed the commitment to go green with other organizations in Milwaukee. UWM is a leading supporter of the Metro Milwaukee Green Initiative. This initiative provides local support, local resources, and local solutions toward going sustainable.

The Metro-Milwaukee Green Commitment

County Executive Scott Walker, Mayor Tom Barrett, the Metropolitan Milwaukee Chamber of
Commerce (MMAC) and The American Society of Quality (ASQ) are working together to launch
and support the implementation of Metro-Milwaukee Green.

The Metro-Milwaukee Green Commitment requires the implementation of 5 Steps toward
Sustainability. These Five Steps are designed to get public and private employers moving
together down the road to sustainability. These first Five Steps were chosen because they are
relatively easy to achieve, are inexpensive to implement (and could even save money), are all
supported by local organizations who are willing to assist with implementation and when taken
together they will mark significant progress for us as a community.

The Five Steps toward Sustainability

1) Robust Recycling Program
2) Energy Management
3) Systematic and Comprehensive Green Cleaning
4) Sustainable Business Network
5) The Great Lakes WATER Initiatives

At UWM

The Metro Milwaukee Green Commitment works well with all of UWM’s ongoing Campus Initiatives (highlight and link to that page). Besides finding best practices for recycling, energy conservation, and green cleaning, UWM has representation with the Sustainable Business Network and houses the Great Lakes WATER Institute research facility.
