Background Information:

Formerly known as the Temporary Academic Building, the North Building was built to temporarily house departments while their regular quarters were being remodeled. The Psychology Department moved into this building from Engelmann Hall in the summer of 1969, and remained there until 1985 when it relocated to Garland Hall. The building is now occupied by the Athletics Department and some offices of Information and Media Technologies.

Asbestos Synopsis:

  • Building was surveyed for asbestos application by DFD, June 2001, in response to DFD 99J3N. Please see the DOA-DFD WALMS room-by-room inspection report, completed January 2002 (Project 00C4H), for a detailed list of asbestos application in this building. Abatement was substantially completed on May 9, 2003.
    • Thermal system insulation (TSI) fittings are asbestos containing material (ACM). Straight section pipe insulation is fiberglass or Armaflex insulation.

    • Floor tile is vinyl asbestos tile (VAT). Mastic is ACM.
    • Ceiling area pans and roof beams are covered with fiberglass insulation. There are areas above the suspended ceiling system of suspected ACM debris from damaged TSI.
    • Steam supply line to building is insulated with asbestos block insulation.
    • Wall material in this building is drywall; only one sample was obtained (negative).
    • Doors have not been sampled.
    • Ceiling tile has not been sampled; most tile has metal surface with fiberglass backing.
    • Several rooms have a plaster ceiling (not sampled).
    • Exterior seams of HVAC duct insulation had non-friable ACM adhesive.
