Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) Image Page-Miscellaneous Materials

Vermiculite:

Bag of Vermiculite

The vermiculite sample on the right (not from the bag of vermiculite on the left) has trace amounts (less than 1%) of actinolite.

Recent published reports have stated that tremolite asbestos may be a contaminant in certain brands of vermiculite.

See: "Recommendations for Limiting Potential Exposures of Workers to Asbestos Associated with Vermiculite from Libby, Montana," NIOSH, May, 2003

Gasket Materials:

Roofing Cement Gasket material is often ACM.

Roofing Materials:

Roofing Cement Asphaltic roofing products, such as this roofing cement, often contains asbestos. OSHA and the Wisconsin DNR have established work practices for roofing repair and roofing abatement projects.

Asbestos Core Doors:

Asbestos Core Fire-Rated Door Photo on the left is the asbestos core of a fire-rated door. We've discovered both chrysotile and amosite asbestos in these cores; in most cases, the core is highly friable if disturbed. Other non-fire rated doors on campus, both wood and metal, have also had asbestos insulation.
Asbestos Core Fire-Rated Door Specialized training and work practice exposure control measures are required for UWM personnel performing maintenance on asbestos core doors.

For renovation projects, unless a door is determined to be asbestos-free, the door shall be disposed as asbestos waste.

Oakum:

This material is oakum pipe joint packing, which is used to seal sanitary sewer pipe joints. Sample #90813K19 was negative, however other oakum varieties in our buildings have tested positive for asbestos and were highly friable (e.g., sample #70102K01, >75% chrysotile).

Examples of roofing material (felt paper, built-up felt paper and tar, and perlitic material in tar). Of these particular samples the felt paper (K45) and built-up sample (K46) are ACM. The EPA/DNR have specialized work procedures for roofing work involving ACM. Asphaltic roofing materials
