How can I tell if I have files on the Alphas?
To figure out if you have files on the Alphas from a Windows computer in a campus computer lab, you should:
- Create a new folder on your desktop to temporarily store the files you want to keep.
- Open an FTP client by going to Start -> Internet Applications -> coreftp
- You may see a dialog box that asks you if CoreFTP should be set as the default FTP Client, click No.
- You may then see another dialog box that asks “Would you like to use ‘notepad.exe’ to edit all ascii files?” Click No.
- Enter Alpha as the site name.
- Enter alphaX.csd.uwm.edu as the host (where “X” is the first letter of your ePantherID)
- Enter your ePantherID as the username.
- Enter your ePantherID password as the password.
- Click connect.
- On the right side panel are the files you may want to download. The left side panel is the download destination folder.
- Select the temporary folder that you created earlier on the left side. The path should look something like: C:\Documents and Settings\your_ePantherID\Desktop\your_folder_name.
- Select and download the files you want to keep by dragging and dropping them to the left side panel or by right clicking and selecting download.
- Once your files have been downloaded to the temporary folder, you can close CoreFTP.
- Right click the temporary folder and select ‘Copy’.
- Open My Computer.
- Open My PantherFile on ‘XythosDrive’ (Z:).
- Right click inside the file explorer window and select ‘Paste’.
- Your files should now be copied to your PantherFile space.
