How can I tell if I have files on the Alphas?

To figure out if you have files on the Alphas from a Windows computer in a campus computer lab, you should:

  1.  Create a new folder on your desktop to temporarily store the files you want to keep.
  2. Open an FTP client by going to Start -> Internet Applications -> coreftp
  3. You may see a dialog box that asks you if CoreFTP should be set as the default FTP Client, click No.
  4. You may then see another dialog box that asks “Would you like to use ‘notepad.exe’ to edit all ascii files?” Click No.
  5. Enter Alpha as the site name.
  6. Enter alphaX.csd.uwm.edu as the host (where “X” is the first letter of your ePantherID)
  7. Enter your ePantherID as the username.
  8. Enter your ePantherID password as the password.
  9. Click connect.
  10. On the right side panel are the files you may want to download. The left side panel is the download destination folder.
  11. Select the temporary folder that you created earlier on the left side. The path should look something like: C:\Documents and Settings\your_ePantherID\Desktop\your_folder_name.
  12. Select and download the files you want to keep by dragging and dropping them to the left side panel or by right clicking and selecting download.
  13. Once your files have been downloaded to the temporary folder, you can close CoreFTP.
  14. Right click the temporary folder and select ‘Copy’.
  15. Open My Computer.
  16. Open My PantherFile on ‘XythosDrive’ (Z:).
  17. Right click inside the file explorer window and select ‘Paste’.
  18. Your files should now be copied to your PantherFile space.
