What is UWM WiFi?

UWM WiFi is pilot project offering a new wireless service in the UWM Union and Golda Meir Library. UWM WiFi offers four service options to access wireless service: ePanther authenticated, sponsored guest, eduroam participating institution, and public. It replaces PROWLnet as the wireless service in the Union and the Library.

What does it mean that this is a “pilot” project?

UWM WiFi was installed in the Union and the Library and during the six month pilot that runs from July 5, 2011–Jan. 4, 2012, the service will be evaluated. Service evaluation and feedback provided by the user community will provide information about how UWM WiFi might be expanded throughout the UWM campus.

Why do I have to set up my device?

UWM WiFi authenticated and eduroam access each require a device configuration for Mac and Windows-based laptops, tablets, and iPhone and Android smart phones. Once your device is set up, you will have immediate access to the wireless service without having to re-input your ePantherID and password. There are some exceptions; for example, some Mac operation systems require authentication even though the device has been set up.

Where do I find information about how to set up my device?

Online instructions for personally-owned devices are available. In addition, instructions are available at UWM WiFi Set-up stations at the IT Consultant desk in the Library Commons and at the Bolton 225 Walk-in Help Desk. Individuals with University-owned devices should consult with their local IT professional.

Why can’t I just use the “public” option rather than going through the set-up to use the authenticated option?

The UWM WiFi public option is not secure and it is NOT recommended if you’re going to be conducting University business, accessing services using your ePantherID /password or conducting other business such as your online banking or making an online credit card purchase which would involve confidential or sensitive information. In addition, the public option is much slower, has limited bandwidth, and disconnects after one hour (although you can reconnect for another one-hour session).

How is UWM WiFi different from PROWLnet? Is PROWLnet still available?

UWM WiFi uses the latest wireless technology in the Union and Library to provide faster, more reliable and secure wireless service as compared to PROWLnet. PROWLnet is still available throughout most of the public areas of the UWM campus.

What should I do if I have a problem or a question?

If you encounter a problem either in setting up your device or in using UWM WiFi, contact the UWM Help Desk at 414-229-4040, toll-free at 877-381-3459 or use on the online request form at GetTechHelp.uwm.edu.

How can I let someone know what I think about the new service?

It’s important that those who use UWM WiFi provide their feedback about the service. An online survey is available at UWMwifiFeedback.uwm.edu. The survey takes only a few minutes and all responses are confidential.
