UWM Art & Design Alumni Exhibition Invitational

All alumni from the UW-Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts Department of Art & Design (formerly Visual Art) are invited to submit Art/Design work for Continuum 2012 in celebration of the Peck School of the Arts' 50th anniversary. The exhibition will be held in both the UWM Union Art Gallery and the Art Center Gallery.

Exhibition dates:

August 27 through September 14, 2012 (continues in the Arts Center Gallery through October 26)

Closing reception:

Friday, September 14, 2012, 5:00 -8:00 pm

Eligibility:

All alumni from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Department of Art & Design are eligible to participate. Each artist/designer may submit up to three works.

Shipping Awards:

There will ten shipping awards (check the box on the entry form to be considered). Notification of shipping awards by June 30, 2012.

Media:

All media: mixed media, painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, works on paper, glass, fiber, ceramics, metal work, jewelry, wood, photography, video, etc. Creative works that have been generated in the last 3 years are strongly encouraged. All entries will be included in the online monitors exhibited in the galleries and included in the online catalog. (Please NOTE: If you do not produce artworks for exhibition, please send us a one-page biography letting us know what you are doing now and a photograph of your self. We will include these in the online monitors in the exhibitions).

Entry Procedure:

Submit images of up to three works in any medium. Size will be limited by the elevator door dimensions of 7.5’ x 4’ x 6’ and weight limited to no more than 150 lbs. (two individuals must be able to lift the work). All works should be ready for hanging or display. Digital media equipment is limited to the equipment available in the galleries. Supplying your own work equipment is possible and helpful. Digital media entries: Submit entries on DVD NTSC (viewable on a standard DVD player) or mpeg files on CD-ROM. Include 4 seconds of black, no slates or bars. Single entries must be on individual disks. Series should be edited together on one disk with 2 seconds of black between each entry. Computer-based formats such as QuickTime or Flash should have a maximum screen size of 1024 x 768.  Format the DVD to include two links on the menu/title page:  the first to the excerpt you wish the jury to review and the second to the entire piece. Label each sample externally with the applicant’s name and title of work.

Postmarked or emailed by July 16, 2012, artists should send:

  • Images: Maximum 3 artworks, with up to three images of each piece. In jpg form: the size of image should be at least 4” x5” at 300 dpi (1200 x 1500 pixel) and save as JPEG file in highest compression. Save your images using your last name_first letter of first name _followed by number and extension. (Example: , and so on) GarrisonL_2detail.jpg
  • Brief Artist Statement (no more than 250 words)
  • A short vita (no more than 500 words)

DVDs and CDs will not be mailed back and will become part of the Continuum records.

Accepted Art Work:

Artists whose artwork is accepted for exhibition will be notified after July 12, 2012. A loan agreement and a detailed set of shipping and exhibition guidelines will be sent to each accepted artist, but it is important that all entrants accept the following conditions:

  • All artwork must be presentation and installation ready.
  • Artwork that differs significantly from the entry submission may be disqualified.
  • The artist is responsible for all inbound and outbound shipping expenses, including insurance while in transit (these expenses must be pre-paid, no COD’s accepted).
  • All artwork will be given professional care and handling and will be insured by the State of Wisconsin Self-Funded Property Program Coverage while in the possession of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  However, UWM will not assume responsibility for damage or loss during inbound or outbound transit.
  • The Peck School of the Arts retains the right to display and reproduce artwork accepted for this exhibition for future publicity and promotional purposes, including the Peck School of the Arts website and exhibition documentation.
  • Individual artists retain the copyrights to their individual artwork.

Delivery of creative work:

Artworks (shipped or hand delivered) are due on or before August 11, 2012. Please deliver to the gallery assigned in the acceptance letter.  All work must be ready for hanging or display. (We will not be able to exhibit works that do not meet this condition.)

  • Friday, August 17, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Saturday, August 18, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

Instructions for mailing and packing creative work:

  • Use bubble or foam wrap.
  • Double box (shippers require double boxing for insurance purposes)
  • The artist must prepay ALL shipping fees INCLUDING INSURANCE and return of creative work. Be sure to provide a shipping LABEL for returning work.

Returning of Creative work:

All creative work must be picked up with ID or authorization at the assigned gallery. Pickup dates:

  • Saturday, September 15, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm
  • Sunday, September 16, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm

Creative work with return labels, prepaid return fees and prepaid INSURANCE will be shipped back ASAP.

There will be no early pickups or returns.

If your work is not picked up, has no return postage, and no other arrangements have been made, the artwork will become the property of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Insurance:

The university will insure the creative work during the show, ONLY (see Signed Art Loan Agreement).

Sales:

Should someone be interested in purchasing the creative work in the exhibition, the gallery will have the artist contact the interested individual.

Shipping Awards:

There will ten shipping awards up to $300.
Notification of shipping awards by June 22, 2012.
