Holiday Hours
The box office will be closed December 21, 2009 through January 17, 2010.
From January 18 to January 23, 2010, the box office will be open 12 noon - 4pm.
Regular hours will resume on Monday, January 25, 2010.
The Peck School of the Arts Box Office is located in the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd. Box office hours are Tuesday-Friday, 10 am to 5 pm and prior to performances. (For performances in the Mainstage Theatre, the Recital Hall, and the Kenilworth building, the box office opens its satellite location prior to curtain. Please contact the box office for specific night and weekend performance hours.)
Please call the box office for accommodations for patrons with special needs and group sales availability.

The setting is a steamy Labor Day weekend in small-town Kansas circa 1953. Into a restless, very female atmosphere comes the young Hal Carter, whose animal vitality seriously upsets the status quo. Frequently hilarious and profoundly moving, Inge's Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece chronicles the hopes and despairs that lie between the realization of adulthood and the eternal optimism of youth. Featuring Diana Carl, Marques Causey, Amy Geyser, Max Hultquist, Raeleen McMillion, April Paul, Emily Vitrano, Andrew Edwin Voss, Jenny Wanasek, Bill Watson & Tami Workentin. Picnic is a collaborative venture with UWM Theatre, using a number of student and faculty actors and faculty designers.

Nathalie Miebach: Weaving Science into Sculpture
Nathalie Miebach’s work focuses on the intersection of art and science and the visual articulation of scientific observations. Using the methodologies and processes of both disciplines, she translates scientific data related to ecology, climate change and meteorology into brightly-colored, three-dimensional woven structures. She discusses Recording and Translating Climate Change, a project she began in 2006 that focuses on the interpretation of weather data through woven sculptures.

Set in 2002 in Jerusalem at the height of the intifada, Paradise tells the story of two high school students--one Palestinian the other Israeli--who are facing a dire time in their lives. From across a divided West Bank, Fatima and Sarah search for truth and question the validity of the war that defines and divides their worlds. In a collision that is both emotionally riveting and wonderfully theatrical, they face a fate that challenges the historical, religious, and national forces of entitlement that we all possess. Directed by UWM Theatre student Janine Bannier, with an all-student cast and production team, the one-act Paradise is a relevant and poignant look into a timeless conflict suitable for all audiences from middle school up.

London-based filmmaker Stephen Connolly will present a program of his 16mm documentary and non-fiction essay films, including The Afflicted States series, a trilogy of films begun in late 2001, “a historical moment when exploring the relationship between the individual and state seemed to take on a new urgency. These short films see the present through the past, seeking to locate significant but overlooked precursors to the contemporary." The Whale (9 min, 2003) is “a deliberation on the state of nature and the nature of the State…. combining several disparate components to consider the need for a renewed communal sensibility in contemporary society” (Jeremy Rigsby); The Great American Desert (16 min, 2007) examines ‘social liberty’ in the West in relation to war, spectacle, the environment and consumerism; and Más Se Perdió (14 min, 2008) draws connections between particular locations in Havana, Cuba, each of which have a relationship to notions of utopia.
Co-presented by the Union Theatre and the UWM Film Department.

In a collision that is both emotionally riveting and wonderfully theatrical, they face a fate that challenges the historical, religious, and national forces of entitlement that we all possess. Directed by UWM Theatre student Janine Bannier, with an all-student cast and production team, the one-act Paradise is a relevant and poignant look into a timeless conflict suitable for all audiences from middle school up.

Anatomy of an Avenue: North, from the Lakefront to Pewaukee
|
More than any other major thoroughfare in the Milwaukee area, North Avenue links neighborhoods, cities and counties. Beginning at the lakefront bluff, traversing the central city, continuing through Wauwatosa and ending at a dead-end turnaround in the town of Pewaukee some 16 miles from its beginning, North Avenue is a microcosm of our region. Nohl Fellow Barbara J. Miner has organized this one-hour panel discussion in conjunction with her photo essay, “Anatomy of an Avenue,” which follows North and examines what unites and divides Milwaukee as a community. It is designed as a visual spur to challenge assumptions and to encourage people to get to know neighborhoods that may seem as distant as far-away countries but that are, literally, only down the street. The panel will be emceed by Joel McNally and Cassandra Cassandra, co-hosts of Morning Magazine on AM 1290 WMCS, and will include Miner and other representatives from the communities along North Avenue.

UWM Theatre Lab/Works Series Under Construction: A Reading of a New Play by Laura Jacqmin

Watch as a play is formed before your very eyes and ears. Laura Jacqmin, winner of the 2008 Wendy Wasserstein award, is the UWM Center on Age & Community/Peck School of the Arts 2009 Artist in Residence, and she is in Milwaukee for three months, August 22-November 22, to create a new play. Her goal is to create a play about memory loss for the regional theater circuit that can also be used in medical education settings. The residency is designed to give her a deep learning opportunity in the area of aging and memory loss to inform the writing of the play. On Thursday Jacqmin hears the play read for the first time. At Sunday's matinee, she—and you—will hear the results of two days of rewriting. Directed by Ed Sobel, former director of new play development at Steppenwolf Theater.

Artists Brent Budsberg & Shana McCaw, Xav Leplae and Iverson White (Established) and Bobby Ciraldo & Andrew Swant, Tate Bunker, Frankie Latina and Barbara Miner report in a year after being selected as 2008 Nohl Fellows as part of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Mary L. Nohl Fellowships for Individual Artists program. The exhibition brings together new work by seven of Greater Milwaukee’s most talented established and emerging artists working in a range of media. A gallery talk begins at 6:30 pm.
