Dance BFA Contemporary Track Majors engage in a graduated practical curriculum daily that centers on foundational understanding of modern and ballet techniques that is augmented by somatic and complementary dance forms. Practical coursework is amplified by informal and formal performance opportunities that use a professional model for rehearsal and production. Advancement to higher course levels is determined by proficiency and placement, and in consultation with the faculty. Degree distribution requirements also require study of world dance forms, complementary dance techniques such as Jazz or Tap, as well as somatic courses such as Alexander Technique, Iyengar Yoga and Pilates.
Repertoire and Ensemble courses with faculty, guest artists and undergraduate or graduate student choreographers are required in the BFA. Two fully-produced faculty/guest artist concerts take place each academic year. These opportunities are supported by an audition process and are supplemented by the Senior Project concert (New Dancemakers), MFA choreographers' concert (Dancemakers), and Musical Theatre productions.
Beginning in their first semester, BFA dancers enroll every semester in a progressive creative curriculum that focuses on compositional skill building and innovation. The capstone course of the creative component of the program is an individually proposed choreographic Senior Project that is adjudicated for the yearly New Dancemakers production or bi-yearly Senior Project showings.
The Dance BFA curriculum requires introductory to advanced theoretical and historical courses. Majors also complete an Applied Anatomy course that introduces a practice-based approach to anatomy and kinesiology.
The understanding and application of pedagogical skills is stressed in the teaching methods component of the curriculum. All BFA majors must enroll in either Dance 361, Dance in Elementary Education or Dance 362, Dance in Secondary Education.
