Film Chair's Letter

Rob YeoRanked among the world’s top twenty five film schools – number 20, to be exact - the UWM Film Department offers an intensive education in film, video, animation, and new media genres. Employing unique educational techniques developed over forty years, the department is widely known for its success in teaching innovation and experimentation in media production.

As a result, we have produced a remarkable, successful set of alumni -- people who are active at high levels in all sectors of contemporary media production. UWM alums have won the Grand Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, have shown their films at the Cannes Film Festival, have had their work collected by the Museum of Modern Art and have had major production credits in a list of well known films, from Titanic to Harry Potter and the Ghostly Hallows.

UWM Film alumni have made a huge difference in Wisconsin as well. Local and statewide media production is growing steadily, suggesting a bright economic future for Wisconsin’s media producers and for the region. UWM Film’s impact on the culture of Milwaukee is also quite apparent. Our alumni direct the Milwaukee Film Festival, now thirteenth largest in the world, and our students organize many other media-related cultural events, such as the Milwaukee Underground Film Festival, in the numerous screening rooms and art galleries throughout the city.

UWM Film offers BFA and MFA degrees and is developing a BA in Animation, which will come on line in Fall 2013. If you are interested in learning innovative media production -- in a hands-on, intellectually ambitious and community-minded department of film, video, animation and new genres -- this is the place for you.

Best wishes,
Rob Yeo, Chair
