Last May, Inova invited Chicago-based artist Adelheid Mers to undertake an institutional mapping project that will help all of us in the Peck School of the Arts—students, faculty, staff, patrons, donors, community partners—imagine our future as we move through our leadership transition.

Mer's overlapping areas of expertise as a visual artist and a professor of arts management come together in the organograms, or maps of institutions, that she creates. These visualizations, based on theory and research, are a particularly creative way for institutions to assess themselves—and what better way for a school of the arts to face the future?

Mers's residency will begin in early February and will consist of a series of trips to Milwaukee to listen to what stakeholders have to say about the school and its future. She will also be studying our web site and printed materials. At the conclusion of her research she will create a large organogram, or visual map, that will be featured in an exhibition opening at Inova/Kenilworth on March 28, 2008. Mers will give a public talk explaining her organogram on March 26 as part of the Department of Visual Arts' lecture series, Artists Now!

I encourage all of you to participate in the project as fully as you can: join one of the group sessions, schedule a one-on-one interview, arrange a brown bag lunch with friends and colleagues, fill out the online survey.
