BFA Degree Opportunities
The Department of Music offers Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Music and in Music Education. The following courses of study are available in the Music BFA: Music Performance, Music History and Literature, and Music Composition and Technology.
Within the Music Performance area, students may concentrate in one of the following six areas: Winds, Brass or Percussion; Strings; Piano and Organ; Voice; or Guitar.

BFA Requirements
The following outline will serve as a guide in planning a major in music. Students are encouraged to consult regularly with their school and departmental advisors as well.

In addition, there are certain basic requirements all majors must fulfill including the Performance Organization Requirement, Recital and Convocation Attendance, the Music Performance Course Enrollment Requirements, and the Music Theory and History Requirements. Credit requirements and course sequences vary from major to major and with area of concentration within each major.

Music Composition and Technologytop
BFA Curriculum
Music Performance
A curriculum in Winds, Brass or Percussion; Strings; Piano and Organ; Voice; or Guitar that prepares the student for both professional performance and studio teaching.
Music History and Literature
A curriculum that focuses on the historical and critical study of music and prepares the student for specialization and graduate work in musicology, music librarianship and music criticism.
Music Composition and Technology
A curriculum that prepares the student for specialization in creative musical writing and related analytical skills and concepts, in conjunction with specific courses of study in microcomputers, electronic music-based software applications, MIDI, sound synthesis, and pedagogy.

Performance opportunities
There are more than 20 student performing groups at UWM, including the Brass Choir, Collegium Musicum, Concert Chorale, Jazz Ensemble, Music From Almost Yesterday, Contemporary Music Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, Symphony Orchestra, University Band, University Choir, Wind Ensemble, UWM Opera, and numerous chamber groups.
