The Multiple Woodwind degree program is designed to prepare undergraduates for either a professional performance career or continue graduate study in orchestral, chamber, solo, theater, jazz and/or commercial performance. Many of our students have begun performing careers immediately following graduation, playing chamber music, musical theater, and commercial music. Such ensembles include jazz and dance orchestras, Latin bands, and many other musical organizations that demand woodwind doubling.
All Multiple Woodwind students are required to take lessons on their primary instrument one hour per week for 8 semesters. Six semesters are required of lessons on their secondary instrument and four semesters on their tertiary instrument at ½ hour per week. A final jury is required for all semesters of study.
Lessons in the Multiple Woodwind area include the same disciplines as all of the instrumental performances areas. This includes the three main categories of applied lessons: sound production, technical exercises, and solo literature and etudes. Students will study standard repertoire from all applicable historical periods and faculty members design each student’s curriculum to reflect a balance that adequately covers all periods. Additionally, the study of non-traditional works is encouraged. New music, including jazz thrives on this campus, and that is reflected in the applied studios.
