James Burmeister came to the UWM Music Department after a distinguished career in organ and church music. He is a past Dean of the American Guild of Organists-Milwaukee Chapter.

In addition to his UWM teaching duties, he serves as coordinator of the UWM Music Department Tutoring Center providing peer tutoring in all required freshman and sophomore music theory and piano courses.

As advisor for the UWM Delta Eta Chapter of the Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, Jim was instrumental in the chapter’s reactivation, numerous awards for excellence, and scholarship awards. He was named “Delta Omicron Adviser of the Year” in 2010.

In May 2010, he was one of five recipients of the UWM-SAC Award for “excellence in teaching students with special needs while maintaining high academic standards.”

Jim is the Director of Music Theory studies for the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO).

He was a past President of the Lyric Opera of Chicago-Greater Milwaukee Chapter and frequent lecturer for the organization.
