Auditions Fall 2016
Membership in UWM choral ensembles is open to any UWM student. Becoming a member of one of our choirs can give you the opportunity to grow and develop as a musician, make new friends, and be part of one of UWM’s most exciting and popular student activities.
Interested students should register for the choir that interests them (contact Dr. Durlam if you are unsure) and sign up for a 10-minute voice placement audition when they arrive on campus in the fall. Sign-up sheets will be posted on August 22 on the choral bulletin board in the Music Building (across from room MUS 165). Various audition times will be available August 29-September 7. Specific audition requirements are listed below.
Women’s Chorus – Women’s Chorus features students of all ages – from first-year through graduate students. Singers interested in the Women’s Chorus do not need to prepare anything for the audition (though students that have a prepared classical solo should bring it). The audition is primarily to place singers on the correct voice part. The audition is very informal and will consist mostly of vocal warm-ups to allow the directors to hear the quality and range of your voice.
University Men’s Choir – Students interested in UMC are not required to prepare anything for the audition, though students that have a prepared solo should bring it to the audition. Students will sing a few vocal warm-ups to determine voice part. Singers will also be asked to sight read, though poor sight-reading performance will not keep students from being in the ensemble. The audition is mostly just a chance for the directors to get to know you and your voice.
Advanced Women’s Choir – AWC is for advanced female singers, and most participants will have at least a year of collegiate singing experience. Incoming first-year students with a significant record of choral participation and vocal success (superior ratings on solos at state solo/ensemble; participation in State Honors or All State choirs) are welcome to audition for AWC as well. Students must bring a prepared classical solo to their audition, and all students will be asked to sight read. Transfer students with at least one year of collegiate singing experience should contact Dr. Durlam at email@example.com for alternate audition requirements.
Concert Chorale – Callbacks for Concert Chorale are by invitation only and will take place on Saturday, September 3. Audition music and a more detailed schedule will be mailed in early July to students who have been called back. Concert Chorale consists primarily of juniors, seniors, and graduate students with a small number of sophomore music majors. Transfer students new to UWM wishing to audition for Concert Chorale must have at least one full year of collegiate choral experience, and these students should contact Dr. Durlam at firstname.lastname@example.org to set up an audition time over the summer. At this audition, students must perform a prepared classical solo and will be expected to demonstrate excellent sight reading skills.
Gospel Choir – Students interested in Gospel Choir do not need to sign up for an audition time, but should instead attend Gospel Choir rehearsal on Tuesday, September 6 at 7 p.m. in MUS 280 where Mr. Daniel will hear you sing individually. No advance preparation is necessary.
