UWM Concert Band Festival
March 11, 2009

The UWM Peck School of the Arts Department of Music proudly presents the 8th annual UWM Concert Band Festival on Wednesday, March 11, 2009. The Festival will be held in the beautiful Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, located on the UWM campus. Bring your bands to our campus for a day of performances, adjudicator feedback, and a live clinic session!

We are excited to announce that Dr. Richard Fischer, Distinguished Professor of Music at Concordia University (Chicago), and Wisconsin's own Rick Kirby, Composer/Arranger and Adjunct Lecturer at Carroll University, will join us on the adjudicating panel this year.

The UWM Concert Band Festival is open to school wind ensembles and concert bands whose applications either meet the February 20, 2009 priority deadline or are among those who fill all of the performances slots on a first-come, first-served basis. We therefore urge you to submit your application as soon as possible.

$275 non-refundable fee for the first band, $425 for two bands from the same school (not the same school district.) We must limit registration to a maximum of two ensembles from any one school, unless otherwise approved in advance by Festival Hosts.

Deadline top
Registrations forms and fees must be returned by February 20, 2009. A packet of information will be mailed to all participating groups by February 27, 2009. This information will include:

  • Final schedule of times for warm-up, performance, and clinic sessions
  • Directions and maps to UW-Milwaukee and the Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts
  • Exact instructions on unloading and loading personnel and equipment
  • Precise listing of percussion to be provided in performance and clinic sites (no percussion available in the warm-up facility). Some percussion will have to be provided by the performing ensemble.
  • Specific information on restaurant options in the UWM Student Union and within walking distance of campus

Perform
Bands will be scheduled in 30-minute blocks to perform concert selections for three adjudicators in the Bader Concert Hall. We suggest 3 selections, or about 15-20 minutes worth of music. On-stage time (including enter and exit) is strictly limited to 30 minutes per ensemble.

Clinics
Immediately following the performance, a clinic on the performance will be facilitated by one of the adjudicators. This is a wonderful opportunity for direct influence from the clinician to your ensemble!

Critical comments
In addition to the live clinic session, the remaining members of the panel will offer their impressions of your performance on cassette tape and written comments on an adjudication rubric. All of these comments are intended to provide the most supportive and constructive suggestions for offering a superb performance.

On the application, please indicate whether you prefer a morning (8:30-11:30 am) or afternoon (1:00-4:00 pm) performance slot. Provide specific needs on the application if applicable. Exact times will be assigned once registration has closed. We will attempt to honor as many requests as possible, and preferences will be considered in order of receipt of the registration form AND payment of registration fees.

It is the responsibility of each conductor to secure for their ensemble(s) their own transportation, meal plans (if any), and complete itinerary. May we suggest the following considerations:

  • enough time for travel and unloading/loading of equipment
  • 30-minute slots will be assigned for warm-up, performance, and clinic sessions
