Dance Days

Dance at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is growing by leaps and bounds. Each year we invite high school teachers to bring their students to campus for one of the Dance Days associated with our productions. Dance Days offer hour-long performances followed by question and answer sessions with our students and faculty. Master classes are available for intermediate/advanced students following the performance. For those wanting to make a full day of it, lunch is available in the UWM Union food court and departmental and campus tours can be arranged. This is an excellent opportunity for students to discover what's happening in the Dance Department, the Peck School and at UWM.

UWM Dance's continued commitment to skillful performance, creative artistic individuality and dynamic teacher training is producing students who are making impressive contributions to our profession locally and nationally. The Department of Dance offers BA, BFA, and MFA degree programs, as well as K-12 Teaching Certification in Dance. Our curriculum has recently expanded to include a Musical Theatre component, and across the Peck School of the Arts, collaborative performing opportunities are burgeoning within a scholastic environment of creativity, innovation, and increasing national prominence.

We are offering two Dance Days for interested high school students this year.

  • Wednesday, December 9, 2009: New Dancemakers: Insight
The day begins at 10 am in Mitchell Hall Studio 254, 3203 N. Downer Ave., on the UWM campus. An hour-long abbreviated production features excerpts from undergraduate student choreography and is followed by an interactive question and answer session. We can seat 90 audience members for the performance. At 11:30am, a 45-minute master class with a UWM Dance faculty member for Intermediate/Advanced dance students will take place in Mitchell 256. We can accommodate 35 students in the master class.

  • Wednesday, February 3, 2010: Winterdances: Identity
The day begins at 10 am in the Mainstage Theatre, 2400 E. Kenwood Blvd., on the UWM campus. The hour-long performance features excerpts from faculty choreography performed by undergraduate dance students and is followed by an interactive question and answer session. We can seat 300 audience members for the matinee performance. Immediately following the Q & A at 11:30am, there will be two 45-minute master classes with UWM Dance Faculty members for Intermediate/Advanced dance students in Mitchell 254 and 256. The two master classes will be finished by 1 pm, leaving plenty of time for lunch and an informal tour of the department if desired. We can accommodate 35 students in each master class for a total of 70.

Fees

The total cost per student for the performance and master class is $8.00 and spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested schools may attend the performance only for $5.00 per student if the class option is full.

Registration

If your school is interested in attending a Dance Day, please call the Dance office at (414) 229-2571 to confirm the number of students attending and the method of payment. We are happy to answer any questions you might have. Transportation to and from the campus is not provided.

We look forward to dancing with you soon!
