A residential option is available for $90 per night or $160 for a double (each person gets their own room). Accommodations include en suite kitchen and bathroom facilities and are located in the Kenilworth Square Apartments, adjacent to the workshop site. Each room has a queen size bed. Space is limited! In this intensive three-day workshop, intermediate guitar students will have an opportunity to work on three compositions by virtuoso/ composer Leo Kottke: "William Powell," "Part Two," and "Orange Room." Archival video, enhanced computer capabilities, and specifically designed pedagogical materials will enable participants to study these pieces in depth.
This class also includes multimedia lecture/presentations on the background, career, compositions, and technique of Leo Kottke, featuring rare archival video of Leo Kottke discussing composition, performance, and a life devoted to music.

"Part Two"
"Part Two" is a 12-string, slide guitar instrumental written in 1981 which first appeared on the extraordinary recording Leo Kottke/Guitar Music. Leo performed "Part Two" in concert until the end of 1987.
Saturday, August 1, 9am-5pm

"William Powell"
Leo Kottke first performed "William Powell" at the Ordway Theatre in St. Paul, MN in 1988, and it has been a consistent feature of his concert repertoire ever since. Its broad allusiveness has charmed audiences of every ilk. It is played in standard tuning in the key of E Major and can be performed on a 12-string guitar or on a 6-string guitar (steel-string or classical).

"Orange Room"
"Orange Room" was written in 1978 and remained in Leo's concert repertoire for approximately five years, from 1978-1983. By 1982 he was playing it as the last section of a spellbinding medley consisting of "Egg Tooth," "Grim to the Brim," and "Orange Room."

Multimedia Presentation: Leo Kottke - background, career, compositions, and technique.
Guitar virtuoso Leo Kottke has not only inspired generations of enthusiasts to take up the steel-string acoustic guitar, but has had an enormous impact on other artists and the world at large. A prolific composer and the voice of our human experience, he is one of the great artists of our time. This multimedia presentation considers his background, his career, and his compositions, with a careful look at his right-hand technique.

Instructor
John Stropes is the director of Guitar Studies at UWM. Through historical research, analysis, transcription, teaching, and performance of finger-style guitar, he has brought focus to this style. His publishing company, Stropes Editions, Ltd., has set a new standard for written music for the guitar and guitar education.
