SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN THEATRE 2009

• an undergraduate back in the Milwaukee area for the summer who needs to pick up courses or credits?
• entering the Peck School as a freshman in the fall and wanting to get a head start?
• a UWM student who needs to fill a fine arts requirement?

The Peck School of the Arts Department of Theatre is offering introductory courses in theatre, acting, design and production and musical theatre suitable for the beginning theatre student as well as non-majors who would like to satisfy a fine arts requirement. Higher level courses include Introduction to Voice and Speech and Storytelling: Telling My Life Story. Undergraduate credit is available to current and special students.

Introduction to Theatre

This course is an introduction to the theatre as a form of artistic, social and human expression from the point of view of both theatre audience and theatre artist. Students will be introduced to the elements of theatre (including analysis, criticism, acting, directing, design, and playwriting) and will have the chance to experience these elements first hand through a variety of activities and projects.  Students will be required to read plays and attend live theatrical performances.

An introduction to the actor's art and craft through lecture, demonstration, exercises, and class assignments. Intro to the Actor's Art is a class in exploring an actor's process. It is designed for the student who wishes to be more comfortable working in front of a group. It is self-contained in that there is very little work expected outside of class.The work is physical and involves a range of physical and vocal exercises.

Stretch your creative muscles while exploring the process an actor goes through in creating a character for the stage. Great practice for those who enjoy dabbling in local community theatre, high school thespians who want a taste of college, and/or anyone who's ever wondered what it's like to act! Or learn to use acting skills as a way to improve your performance at home, work, and school with new confidence & creativity! This quick four-week class will use theatre games and exercises in a unique and user-friendly Five-Step process designed by the instructor to bring out the best performance in you!

Looking for a project oriented class to explore theatre design and production? This course is for you. No theatre experience necessary! We'll take backstage tours; explore the dressing rooms and production shops; and talk with theatre designers about their work. This course will use a blended/hybrid format—we'll meet half of our class time face to face (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) and complete work on-line the other half. Like to talk? Then this is a class for you! We will use theatre games and exercises as a fun way to explore your vocal potential—games and exercises used by professional actors in training and preparation for performance. You will have an opportunity to demonstrate your new confidence while improving your voice production as well as your speech clarity—with in-class performances of poetry, plays, and storytelling. These skills easily transfer to virtually every occasion that calls for talking! This quick four-week class will include one night out at a Comedy Sportz performance to observe voice and speech skills at work on stage!

Storytelling: Telling My Life Story

Have you ever asked yourself what your life is about?
What are the values that guide you?
How does the immediacy of the here and now hold up when we listen to each other talk about our lives?
Then this is the course for you! You will learn how to tell, listen, collect, and perform stories. It is a course that is partially online and it allows participants to explore the stories of self and others. We will use some of the techniques developed by the StoryCorps project to make connections through listening, and relationship building as we tell and converse.

This is a two-step process.

1. Apply online at www.apply.wisconsin.edu
For graduate credit: Click on “Graduate School Apply online”
For undergraduate credit: Click on “Special Student Apply online”
Select: UW-Milwaukee
Then click “web application.” After New User, click “Register.” Follow the online instructions, fill out the application, then click “Register.”
Within one week of applying for admission online, you will receive a welcome letter from UWM through the U.S. Postal Service providing you with your campus ID# and PIN along with registration directions.

2. Register online at www.paws.uwm.edu
Refer to the 5-digit class number in this brochure when registering for your course.
Please note payment deadlines to avoid late payment penalties.

Parking

Campus parking is available in the Union Parking Garage, entrance at 2200 E. Kenwood Blvd.; in the lot behind the Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts, 2419 E. Kenwood Blvd.; or on the street (meters in effect). ). Parking at both locations is free on Sundays only.
