In this course you will be introduced to a variety of graphic novel and comic book artists who can be incorporated into interdisciplinary arts based curricula. Class methodology will consist of readings, discussions, films, and class presentations. After discovering how graphic novelists use and manipulate historical and contemporary social issues as the building blocks for their art you will apply these skills to create your own original piece of graphic storytelling.

Two weekends, 9 am - 2:30 pm each day
Instructor: Joann Engelhart
Fee: $150 (includes supplies & materials; non-credit only)
Location: Art Building Room 402
Open to adults & older teens
A workshop for beginners and experienced dyers
Learn to use pattern resists for dyebaths. Clamp, fold, pleat, stitch, wrap and encase objects in cloth to create unusual patterns. Re-dye the fabric several times to achieve layers of colors and patterns. Even better, use both fiber-reactive dyes and vat dyes to create gorgeous additional colors and halos, caused by chemical reactions between the two dyes. The possibilities are endless!
What can you make with dyed cloth?
On the second weekend, you can dye more cloth and/or sew the dyed fabric to create a wall hanging, a small quilt top, several scarves, a pillow or pillowcase, or a table runner/tablecloth. Or just take the fabric home and create art, home decor, garments, or accessories.
Supplies
You will be given 5 yards of white cotton to dye, but you can bring your own fabric in addition. It must be 100% cotton, not permanent press. You can also dye silk and viscose rayon (not acetate rayon). No polyester, no man-made cloth. If in doubt, bring the fabric to class.
What to wear
Wear old clothes (black is best) and old shoes. Bring dishwashing rubber gloves, a smock or apron (optional), about 20 plastic grocery bags or any large plastic bags.
