Mutópe J. Johnson
Native Milwaukeean, Mutópe J. Johnson is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. His broad experiences includes professional roles such as Art director and Creative Director positions while concurrently painting for more than ten years as a fine artist.
Johnson’s current body of work can be described as figurative compositions primarily created using the color indigo and serves as a manifestation of the Social Realism tradition, (cultural scene painting} which blossomed during the New York, Harlem Renaissance period 1920’s and early 1930’s, and forms an intersection with today’s African-American contemporary art scene. “ Johnson has had exhibitions at Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, Ky, the Juxtaposition Gallery Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Susan Woodson Gallery Chicago, Illinois, the Peltz Gallery Milwaukee, and many others. Mutópe is currently pursuing his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing.
