UWM Year of the Arts


In the 2012-13 academic year (July 2012-June 2013), UWM will celebrate the Year of the Arts through a series of events, programs and activities taking place on campus and in collaboration with a wide-variety of community partners. The Year of the Arts will recognize the 50th anniversary of the Peck School of the Arts, its influence in the Wisconsin arts community, and the impact that the arts has in every discipline..

Watch this space for announcements about upcoming events and programs that will take place throughout the Year of the Arts! Below is a list of just some of activities currently in the works:

  • Bring high-profile speakers and guests to campus for UWM commencement/convocation ceremonies, school-wide and university-wide programs, etc.
  • Host a conference on the role of arts in education, in the workforce and in the community – now and in the future
  • Commission and produce Year of the Arts theatre, dance, and music performances as well as visual art and films along with other community cultural organizations
  • Celebrate the LGBT Film/Video Festival 25th Anniversary
  • Collaborate with the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) to co-host the Southern Graphic International Conference which will invite and draw up to 2,000 printmakers to the Milwaukee area in Spring 2013
  • Co-host the annual conference of the Society for Literature, Science, and the Arts (SLSA), sponsored by UWM's Center for 21st Century Studies in collaboration with the Peck School's Institute of Visual Arts (INOVA)
  • Chair the 2012 biennial, virtual, international design conference called GLIDE: Global Interaction in Design

  • Launch a University-wide book read or film review initiative
  • Organize in-school, cross-discipline lectures that relate to the arts and creativity across the campus
  • Partner with Florentine Opera and Present Music to produce a world premiere opera
