Academic Programs
The UW-Milwaukee School of Public Health conducts rigorous public health research and scholarship, educates the current and future public health workforce, and influences the development of strategies and policies that promote health among diverse populations.
UWM's PhD programs are interdisciplinary degrees with the objective of building cohorts of scholars capable of advancing the empirical base that supports the discovery, application, delivery, and evaluation of public and community health initiatives. In addition to building a capacity for lifelong learning, a social justice approach is used to develop competent and effective public health leaders. Graduates of these programs will be prepared to conduct research in many settings, including academia, non-governmental organizations (business and non-profit), and public service at all levels of local, regional, national and international government.
Currently Enrolling
The Graduate Certificate in Public Health is designed for students and working professionals involved in health programming, evaluation, education policy, engineering, administration, research and other areas related to public health. The PhD in Environmental and Occupational Health broadly focuses on the environmental determinants of disease in the general population and occupational settings. It allows students the opportunity to investigate the interaction of such environmental factors with individual facets of disease susceptibility such as genetics, age, and development. Both of these programs are currently enrolling students for Fall 2009.
Future Programs
The Masters in Public Health is designed to prepare students with the foundation necessary to build a career of leadership in public health. This program is anticipating admission for Fall 2010. The PhD in Community and Behavioral Health Promotion will train students to study the social determinants of health. The PhD in Epidemiology will study distribution and determinants of disease and disability in populations. The PhD in Public Health Administration and Policy will prepare researchers and teachers to address policy and administration issues that impact public health. These three PhD programs are still in the planning stages and are not offered at this time.
