"In 2008, the City of Milwaukee ranked worse than all but one county in overall health outcomes, and worse than all but one county in...risk factors for future health (Milwaukee Health Report 2009)." The result? A hugely negative impact on the quality of life, and from a practical perspective, a huge economic burden. Access to health care is simply not the answer - prevention is key.
All people are affected by public health issues in daily life; consider the importance of safe drinking water or managing the H1N1 outbreak. But, there are others who suffer more, especially disadvantaged children. The School of Public Health will have a social and environmental justice focus, to make sure that as a society we do what we can to help those most in need.
What will the School of Public Health do? Among other things, we will research solutions to public health problems and disseminate those findings locally and nationally to make Milwaukee and Wisconsin a healthier place. We will formulate and advocate for policy change. We will educate our students so they become future public health professional leaders. We will provide continuing education, so lacking now, to current public health professionals. We will partner with local agencies, such as the Milwaukee Health Department, in the community outreach and programming.
