HELI Workshop at the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research
Kourosh Ravvaz, PhD Candidate in Medical Informatics at the LPHIG, has been admitted to the competitive and very popular Health Equity Leadership Institute Workshop to be held at the UW Institute for Clinical and Translational Research in this summer. He is among 26 successful attendees from all over the United States.
The Health Equity Leadership Institute (or HELI) program has been designed in partnership with other research collaborators at the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity. The HELI program is carefully structured to include both large didactic sessions, as well as small group sessions, special events and mentoring opportunities. This year, several translational research efforts underway in Wisconsin will be showcased. Each of these has a health equity/disparities focus (nutrition and physical activity, asthma and Vitamin D Supplementation) and is being conducted in partnership with diverse community partners. The program will also highlight an exciting community-based participatory research initiative exploring individual decision making about participation in biomarker research projects. During the workshop, it is planned to introduce several of the ICTR community partners who reside in both rural and urban settings of Wisconsin. Most importantly, the Institute is designed to foster professional networking for participating scholars and to create a collaborative learning environment for both scholars and Institute faculty.
We currently have a project assistantship position available for immediate appointment. LPHIG develops mathematical models, simulations and predictions that address quantitative public health problems and opportunities that emerge from the use and promise of new discoveries in genetics, gene-environment interactions, translational research, and personalized medicine.
Role and duties: the individual in this position will participate in the development and use of cutting-edge software applications and tools to solve complex mathematical and computational problems in public health informatics. Public health informatics is the systematic application of information and computer science and technology to public health practice, research and education. A project assistant must be a current full-time graduate student taking a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester or a matriculating PhD student that has registered for a minimum of 9 credit hours.
Qualifications: knowledge or experience in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, or public health informatics or any related area. Individuals with programming experience and familiarity with medical and electronic health data and systems, or with experience in quantitative methods used in public health, medicine or health care are highly desired. Applicants should describe their current or previous public health, programming, or medical care experience or experience in other quantitative or scientific disciplines. Experience in bioinformatics, biostatistics, mathematics or biomedical research is desired. An undergraduate degree is required.
To apply: email applications (Subject: LPHIG ZSPH Research Assistantship), including a summary statement of personal objectives and research interests, and a resume or CV of no more than three pages, to Peter J. Tonellato. (ptone@uwm.edu)
F1000 Posters give poster presenters and supporting societies the opportunity to disperse their work to a wider audience. It will provide a permanent, structured environment for the deposition of posters as well as a trustworthy venue for ongoing discussion and development of the information being presented.
