Reporting at UWM

University personnel require data in order to assess, evaluate and plan. However, it isn't always clear where the date can be found, who can get at it, how it is accessed and how to interpret it accurately. The goals of the Reporting at UWM website are to provide the direction and insight into how any member of campus can get the data they need.

First the basics:

Where does the data come from?

Student information is collected at the time of application and stored in PeopleSoft, locally known as PAWS (Panther Access to Web Services) at UWM. Much of that data is subsequently collated and stored for end-user access in the UWM's data warehouse, aka Reporting Data Store (RDS). Each evening data is loaded into the RDS where it can be readily accessed using query tools. Current, historical and data collections, e.g. data related to applications, are available. For more information regarding more technical aspect of the RDS, including the schedule of table loading, please see the Data Administration section of this site.

There are also two additional data warehouses available for use: 1) budget and expenditure data is available via WISDM (Wisconsin Data Mart); 2) budget and personnel data is available via InfoAccess and HRS; 3) Student Financial data is available via SFS.

Who can access data?

All UWM who have been given appropriate authorization can request access to any of the data warehouses mentioned above. Self-service reporting can be done at no charge utilizing the resources available on this site, including the Query Library that houses commonly-used queries and reports.

Customized reports can be obtained through University Technology Services (UITS). Beginning March 1, 2012, these reports will be completed on a charge-back basis with reporting requirements and project management being billed at $30/hour, while the actual development and execution of a report will occur at $60/hr. Cost-sharing is available to eligible units.

How to access the data.

The campus-wide supported query tool used to access data in any of the warehouses is the Interactive Reporting Work Space (Hyperion v. 11.). In addition, any SQL-based Oracle compatible query tool can be used.

We encourage you to learn more detail and helpful hints about all these topics by exploring the Reporting at UWM website.
