In 1999, the Student Accessibility Center (SAC) saw the need to honor instructional staff for their effective teaching strategies when working with students with disabilities. The SAC team implemented and hosted a new award program, the Above & Beyond Awards.  SAC created this award to honor instructional staff that demonstrated exemplary service to SAC students, insuring the quality of their educational experience at UWM. Often, there are many acts of service that go unrecognized.

In 2009 we changed the name of our award to the SAC Excellence Award to better reflect the exemplary efforts individuals have made to eliminate barriers for full access for students with disabilities in their educational pursuits at UWM.  This annual award additionally serves to generate awareness across campus of the needs of students with disabilities.

Any UWM instructional staff member is eligible to be nominated for the SAC Excellence Award.  The nominating SAC student(s) should base the recommendation on the following criteria:

Instructional staff:

• Ensures that students whose disabilities often require creative solutions have equal access to UWM classes and programs

• Shows professionalism when interacting with SAC students and SAC staff

• Shows evidence of sensitivity to this diverse student population

• Shows evidence of integrating the concept of Universal Design into the course
