Mission Statement

  • The mission of the Student Accessibility Center is to create an accessible university community for students with disabilities, which fosters the development of each student’s full potential.
  • As a campus resource, SAC works with students, faculty and staff to promote an increased awareness of the abilities of all students and to ensure they are regarded on the basis of ability, not disability.

Eligibility

Any UW-Milwaukee student with a disability that restricts one or more of life’s major activities may benefit from SAC services. We work with students with mobility, sensory, communications, mental, or learning differences, as well as those with basic health impairments. Students are eligible for services through SAC if they are enrolled in the university and can provide documentation of their disability.

In order to ensure timely provision of requested services, students are encouraged to provide SAC with the appropriate documentation and requests for accommodations as early as possible for a course, workshop, program or activity. Reasonable accommodations may include registration assistance, including priority registration, referrals, and general advising.

Accessibility

SAC recognizes that accessibility has various aspects.
Though not limited to these four, SAC assists with the following access concerns:

Physical –

The lake effect winter of UWM causes physical access difficulties with its icy pathway and occasional snowdrifts. SAC works with the Physical Plant to keep pathways clear. While campus is mostly wheelchair accessible, courses scheduled in inaccessible locations can be relocated upon request.

Programmatic-

Providing academic adjustments, advocacy and liaison services, adaptive educational materials and other program assistance allows for access to university programs. SAC works closely with campus departments in identifying appropriate options and adjustments for accommodating students.

Attitudinal-

Often, having a disability involves accomplishing tasks "differently." Through our faculty and staff liaison network we continually engage in advocacy efforts and training sessions to educate the campus community on disability rights and issues.

Technological-

Efforts continue annually to work towards accessibility in all campus labs and libraries. There are computers that are equipped with adaptive technology for students’ use in several locations on campus including Bolton, Mitchell and the Library.
