OTHER DISABILITIESThere are many different "hidden" disabilities, which simply means disabilities which are not obvious or apparent. A hidden disability can be difficult for the student who has it because, although many of these are serious (like hearing impairment, learning disability, epilepsy, lupus, cancer, back problems, psychological disabilities, heart and respiratory problems, etc.), the student doesn’t “look” disabled, so many people don't realize that s/he needs any accommodations.Usually, making accommodations for students is a matter of common sense, and of checking with the student her/himself. Look at each person as an individual. Offer help, but wait until it is accepted before giving it. Not everyone will need it. Help students to develop independence instead of rushing to do everything for them. Once accommodations have been made, students are to be judged on their ability, like every other student, and are to be responsible for their own arrangements and deadlines. Contact SAC if you have any questions. |
