STUDENT ORGANIZATION NEWS

STUDENT ORGANIZATION REGISTRATION
Registration renewal forms were sent via campus mail to student organizations mailboxes on Monday, August 27, 2007. The registration forms this year have been updated to make it clear what information will be publicly released in accordance with the Family Right to Privacy Act. All student organizations must fill out, sign, and RETURN THE FORM PRIOR TO SEPTEMBER 21ST TO REMAIN ACTIVE ON CAMPUS. Groups failing to turn in their renewal forms by this date will become inactive and lose all university privileges, such as: segregated fee funding, room reservations, office space, etc. THE FORM IS REQUIRED, EVEN IF YOU TURNED IN A CHANGE OF OFFICER FORM IN THE SUMMER. Although the forms are due 9/21, we encourage people to get them in sooner, so that new students can be given more accurate information about clubs and groups on campus. Please check with all your officers to make sure someone turns in this form by the posted deadline.

ORGANIZATION AND CAMPUS RESOURCE FAIR – Campus Expo
The annual Party with the Panther event is changing names to Campus Expo. The event will now include campus jobs, services, mentors, and student organizations. It will be held Wednesday, September 5, 2007 in Spaights Plaza from 10 am to 2 pm. This is a great way to promote your organization and get more members. Organizations may sign up for a booth space by sending an email to activities@uwm.edu. Open tables at 10:00 am on that day will be given to organizations on the waiting list. Instructions and table assignments can be found at: http://www.uwm.edu/Dept/sao/Orgfair.htm. There are still a few tables left and will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

STUDENT ORGANIZATION STATE ACCOUNTS
The Student Activities staff members are currently working to close out the 2006-2007 fiscal accounts for student organizations and will not be able to report actual carry-over revenue or roll-over funds until the end of September or early October. 2007-2008 accounts have been set up and any check off or SAC funding you were allocated have been posted to the accounts.

SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE (SAC) WEBSITE
SAC has created a new website with grant information, forms, and procedures for student organizations funding (http://www.uwm.edu/StudentOrg/sa/sac.htm) . The Student Activities Office has removed old SAC information from its website and put a link to the SAC new website in its place. Questions concerning SAC procedure, meetings dates and times, or allocation limits should be directed to Tyler Draheim, Senate Appropriations Committee Chair at: tdraheim@uwm.edu.

PANTHERFEST
UWM is trying something new to welcome back the school year. So save the date. You’re invited to PantherFest, the ultimate UWM celebration being held Friday, September 7, on the Summerfest grounds. Join students and staff for an evening of fun and campus spirit. There’s plenty of socializing to be done preshow from 5-7:30 p.m. Then two Talib Kweli and O.A.R. will perform in the Marcus Amphitheater. PantherFest is free. CHANGES TO THE SPECIAL SECURITY EVENT POLICY IN THE UNION
Student Organization planning events that require security will be required to attend Volunteer Training and Certification Program for Special Security Events at the UWM Union. This advanced training program will be set up as a tool to also be used in conjunction with already existing day-of-event trainings and meetings. Generally, the four main officers of a sponsoring organization wishing to host a special security event will be required to be certified as volunteers prior to the event. Additional certified volunteers prior to the event are highly encouraged, but will not be required.

ENGELMANN GYM PRIORITY REGISTRATION - Fall 2007
UWM student organizations are invited to reserve times in the Engelmann gymnasium. Times are limited (generally late Friday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays) and are assigned by a lotto system on the night of the first registration. Space is available in 1 ½ - 2 hour increments. Organization representatives may request one time slot the first day of registration. If a second time slot is desired (and available), the organization representative must return on the second day of registration to schedule a 2nd time slot. at least one current officer of the organization must sign the contract at registration time. You will also be asked to put the name and contact information of another current officer. For more Information: M.A. Kelling: 229-3777.

ENTERPRISE CAR RENTAL CONTRACT CHANGES
If your student organization needs to rent a vehicle traveling either within the state or traveling from Wisconsin to a different state in order to conduct official student organization mission, Enterprise must be used. Registered student organizations conducting student organization business are eligible for the state contract rate. All renters must be at least 18 years old (a change from 21), have a valid operator's license, a minimum of two year licensed driving experience and have submitted a current Driver Authorization Application with the Student Activities Office (Wisconsin drivers must allow at least 5 business days and drivers from other states must allow 10 business days for processing). Driver authorization must be done each year. Each vehicle should have a minimum of two authorized drivers when two or more students are traveling. If traveling over six hours one way, there should be at least three authorized drivers per vehicle. Volunteers may ride in (but not drive) the rental vehicle if preauthorized by Risk Management. The prices have increased for the standard and full size vehicles by $1 per day per vehicle. There is also a title and registration recovery fee (TRRF) of $0.41 per vehicle per day added to all rentals.

If you think you will be driving for student organization business in the fall or spring, submit your new Driver Authorization Application to the Student Activities Office now to make your vehicle rental set up go more quickly.

UPCOMING EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

UWM COLLEGE BIGS" PROGRAM (UWM Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership)
The UWM Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership hopes that you will help us to collect educational toys for our daily "UWM College Bigs" Program. During the school year over 100 UWM students volunteer once a week to mentor a local youth at an MPS school. One of the things that makes this experience more productive and meaningful for the UWM students and the kids that they mentor is having structured and educational activities that are fun and interactive. With this, we are holding an educational toy drive throughout campus for the next 60 days. Please consider donating toys such as: flashcards, paints, paintbrushes, arts and crafts, botany sets, Sally Ride Science books, markers, model planes, model cars, sewing kits. Also, the website http://www.wonderbrains.com has a number of items that are great for the program that vary in price from $5 - $30. If you go to this website, consider ordering any of the following: the GeoSphere, IZZI, the Fifth Chair, the Magnetic Mosiaics, Solar Racers, Trainmech, Young Architects, Adventures in Science kits.

We hope that departments will get involved in this effort, either by holding a drive right in the office, or doing a money collection and then purchasing one or more of the toys online. If you are willing to hold a drive in your department, we can provide a bin and signage. Otherwise, individual donations can be dropped off at the Center for Volunteerism in the Union Room G28. THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP RETREAT -- SEPT 22 & 23 (UWM Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership)
The Student Leadership Retreat is an annual trip to Camp Minikani for students at UWM that are interested in improving there leadership skills and making their campus and community a better place. This year the retreat is planned for September 22 & 23. The retreat is free to all students as a thank you for the important work that they do in providing UWM with direction, programming, and service. Students will stay overnight at the camp and participate in a number of different activities and workshops. Some of these activities may include a personality type exercise, a ROPES course, camp wide games, a movie about leadership, and a social bonfire. This weekend is a great way to meet other leaders around campus, learn new skills and make new friends! The retreat is free to UWM students and transportation and meals are provided. AIDS WALK WISCONSIN
The walk takes place September 29th at the Summerfest grounds. It's a 5K, and all proceeds go directly to the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin which provides prevention, treatment, and medical care to those affected by HIV and AIDS, regardless of their ability to pay. Our website (www.aidswalkwis.org) is a great place to find out more information about the walk and also to register teams/individual walkers. It's a ton of fun--there is no minimum fundraising requirement and it's a great way to kick-off a new school year.
