MARKETING PLANNING FOR PROGRAMS
A strong marketing campaign is critical to the success of any program. This workshop will focus on how to develop a strong marketing plan for student organization sponsored events.
Two sessions offered:  Tuesday, October 28, 4:00pm Union 343 or Wednesday, October 29, 4:00pm Union 346.   The programs are identical, attend whichever one your schedule permits.

NEW OFFICE SUPPLY VENDOR – CORPORATE EXPRESS
The state has issued and awarded a new contract for office supplies and new toner to Corporate Express.  Since there are no retail stores for Corporate Express, all office supply purchases must be made through the Center for Student Involvement.  If you would like to view pricing for Corporate Express, you can go to the Materials Distribution Services in Madison website.  Click the  "Been Here" button and log in as the MD Number "GUEST" with the password "GUEST1."  Click on the link  “Shop at our office supplies prime vendor, Corporate Express” to view the catalog.  You can also view other contract vendors, such as Dell or Grainger for pricing information.  We have been told that the delivery time for orders should be 24-48 hours for in-stock items.  Specialty or out-stock items will take longer.

POLITICAL ACTIVITY REMIDER
The  State defines political activities  as “solicitation of campaign contributions, service in furtherance of candidates, political parties and political action committees, and advocating a particular position on a referendum, but also promoting action on issues which have become highly identified as dividing issues between the candidates.”  (http://wwwnew.uwsa.edu/govrel/camprule.htm)  If outside money is deposited into a state account, that money is treated the same as state funds and cannot be used toward political activities.

UNION OFFICE SPACE AVAILABLE
There are currently vacant office spaces available on the third floor of the Union.  If you are interested in obtaining space, please contact Kyle Duerstein (kjd4@uwm.edu), Office Allocation Director, AND Tommy Hughes (trhughes@uwm.edu), Union Policy Board Chair, prior to Wednesday October 29.  You will then be instructed on how to go about officially applying for vacant office space, and details, including a time line for this process.  OFFICE SPACE IS ONLY GRANTED THROUGH MAY 30, 2009 AT THIS TIME.  Additional information will be distributed later this semester about applying for office space for the 2009-2010 school year.

COUNCIL OF STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS (COSO)
One of the duties of the Student Activities Advisor was to advise and help coordinate the activities of the Council of Student Organizations.  When the funding for the Student Activities Advisor was cut COSO along with other training activities had to be discontinued.  Now the Tom Dake has been hired to as the Student Activities Advisor, the Center for Student Involvement will be looking to reestablish COSO and some ongoing training activities for student organizations.

CVSL RAK-ATHON
The Rak-athon (random acts of kindness) - Nov 8th from 9am – 1pm, Center for Volunteerism and Student Leadership (CVSL)
Join 250 fellow UWM students, faculty, and staff for a morning of service helping neighborhood elderly people winterize their homes! This includes raking, putting up storm windows, moving lawn furniture in for the season, sweeping, and other tasks.  This is a great, fun event, where you can sign up with a group of friends as a team or as an individual.  You will be assigned 4 people to a home and given a list of tasks. Then you go to the older adult’s home and complete the volunteer work.  Transportation is provided!  To register please email  your Name, Cell phone, Email, Team (If applicable) to lmarks@uwm.edu.  For group sign-ups, please stop by the Center for Volunteerism & Student Leadership for a team registration form or just send all the required info for each team member.

STUDENT SERVICE RECORD PROGRAM (SSR)
Get recognized for volunteering – sign up for the student service record (SSR) program!
Through the Student Service Record program (SSR), students can track their volunteer work through the Center for Volunteerism & Student Leadership website and then after you complete a minimum of 75 volunteer hours, you will receive a certificate highlighting your service. This is a great way to stand out when looking for a job; you can use your service record as accompaniment piece to your resume! There is a great selection of agencies to choose from and once you choose one all you have to do is volunteer and record your hours.  For more information contact Jessica Biba at jabiba@uwm.edu

MIDWEST SERVICE LEADERS CONFERENCE
Just a reminder that the registration deadline for the Midwest Service Leaders Student Conference is tomorrow, October 24th.  Marquette University will be hosting the Midwest Service Leaders Conference November 7-9. It will be a student-led regional conference aimed at helping students develop skills, passion, and knowledge to inspire meaningful service projects at their campuses.  It serves as a great opportunity for students from Midwestern universities, colleges, and technical colleges who are leaders in service learning and community service programs on their campuses to network, share suggestions, and learn about new ideas within the world of service. The conference also provides a unique community in which to discuss and develop thoughts around the topics of creating change around social injustice, learning successful leadership strategies, recruiting and retaining a peer volunteer force, developing partnerships in the community, and leading reflection sessions.  The cost of registration is $75, and includes all conference sessions, materials, and three meals (breakfast and lunch Saturday and brunch Sunday).  Registration confirmation, parking information, and directions can be found at http://www.marquette.edu/servicelearning/upcomingevents/mslc.shtml . The registration deadline is October 24th, 2008.  For more information contact Kalyn Gigot, Midwest Service Leaders Conference Coordinator: kalyn.gigot@marquette.edu or 414-288-3264.
