Student Organization Training.

The Student Activities Office offers training for student organizations and their advisors. The following topics are available by appointment:

About Training Sessions

Those attending are strongly encourage to bring a laptop computer with wireless internet so that the need for handouts can be reduced and important resources can be “bookmarked” on laptop browsers for later use (this is not required).

Trainings are generally offered as “repeat sessions” on different days of the week and times of day to allow individuals with different schedules to attend. Individuals who attend trainings are expected to share the information provided with the other members of their student organization.

The following workshops for student organizations and their advisors are currently being offered:

New Officer Training: Getting Things Done On Campus (repeating session)
This workshop focuses on the basic “How to’s” for student organizations. It includes information on how the University  and the student government are  structured, working with the Student Activities Office, annual due dates to plan for, basic information on accessing University resources and where to find information your organization needs. Open to UWM student organization members, officer candidates and current officers.
September 15 & 16, 3pm, Union 340

Marketing your organization/PR plans (repeating session)
Some people think public relations (PR) is all about spin: putting a particular interpretation of an event or fact in place to minimize harm to an organization’s reputation. There is a great deal more involved in building relationships with the various “publics” your organization interacts with (students, the family of current members, Milwaukee community, National organizations, etc.). This workshop will focus on clarifying the values and reputation for a student organization and show how these items, once developed, can contribute to a positive PR and marketing plans for the organization. Co-sponsored with Union Marketing.
September 22 & 23, 3pm, Union 340

Major Event/Program Planning Logistics (repeating session)
Major events take careful planning and this workshop focuses on the logistical aspects of this planning. This workshop will address the most common program aspects of student organization sponsored major events.  The specifics of your organization’s individual events will determine what details need to be planned for and confirmed. Student organizations are strongly encouraged to seek advice regarding programming logistics as early as possible in the planning process. Program planning assistance is available from the Union Reservations & Event Planning Services (REPS) at 229-4828 or the Student Activities Office at 229-5780. Fundraising Planning (repeating session)
Most student organizations are eager to develop new and better fundraising opportunities. This workshop will offer insight into how to plan fundraising activities including the development of a long range fundraising strategic plan.
October 6 & 7, 3pm, Union 340

Marketing Plans for events (repeating session)
A strong marketing campaign is critical to the success of any program. This workshop will focus on how to develop a strong marketing plan for student organization sponsored events. Co-sponsored with Union Marketing.
October 13 & 14, 3pm, Union 340

Presenting a Proposal (repeating session)
This workshop will assist students in preparing for and presenting a proposal on behalf of their organization. Proposals are used for event co-sponsorships, funding allocations/grants, and seeking collaboration partnerships.
October 20 & 21, 3pm, Union 340

Programming Partners: Co-sponsorships with Union Programming (repeating session)
This workshop will walk student organizations through the process of completing the Union Programming Co-sponsorship Proposal form. Student organizations who submit proposals that are accepted gain valuable support and assistance from partnering with Union Programming departments in planning and promoting their events. Proposals for fall semester 2009 programs are being taken now. Co-sponsored with Union Programming.
October 27 & 28, 3pm, Union 340

Recruitment and retention of members (repeating session)
Student organizations are always looking for quality new members. This workshop focuses on developing an on-going plan for bringing new members into your organization, providing them with the orientation and training to be successful organization members and retaining and motivating current members.
November 3 & 4, 3pm, Union 340
