Fourteen designers transform ordinary building materials into provocative architectural installations. Cedar planks become a billowing cloud. Oak beams branch and nest like the canopy of a forest. Metal strips dissolve into a gauze-like curtain. These constructions tap the beauty of geological and biological systems, and explore the mysteries of complex Nature. The exhibition includes full-scale architectural prototypes of ceiling and wall systems, as well as oneiric structures and other curious artifacts. Assisted by techniques of mass-customization and experimental fabrication, these designers adapt traditional, analog conceptions of materiality to their desire for an exuberant, pulsating, interior world.
