James W. Shields, FAIA, Associate Professor

Bio
James W. Shields, FAIA is a Design Principal at HGA Architects and Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. James was elected to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects in 2010 for Design Excellence. Maintaining an active practice designing public buildings, James has received over a dozen Design Awards from the American Institute of Architects in Wisconsin for such projects as the Discovery World Museum on Milwaukee’s Lakefront, the DeVos Art Museum and Art+Design Department at Northern Michigan University, and the Butterfly Vivarium at the Milwaukee Public Museum. Shields has also received a number of National Design Awards for religious architecture for built work like the St. Boniface Church in Mequon, the St. Norbert’s College Chapel and the Milwaukee Catholic Cathedral. His teaching includes a graduate level Design Studio where students program, design and detail a small public building, and the required Building Construction course. Shields is the author of two books: The Cities of James Duane Doty, and Architectural Representation.
