Coordinated Degree Program in Transportation Engineering and Urban Planning Application

Priority Application Deadline: January 15 (fall admission), October 1 (spring admission)
Begin the application process one year in advance. 

Candidates seeking admission to the MS/MUP Program must apply to and be admitted to both programs. Submit only one application and fee to the Coordinated MS/MUP Program. 

Application to the MUP Program requires a bachelor’s degree in any discipline and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 (4.0 scale). Application to the MS Engineering Program requires an undergraduate major in engineering, mathematics or a natural science.


  1. Application, Reasons Statement and Fee
    Complete the UWM Graduate School application form on-line at:
    Submit only one application and fee to the Coordinated MS/MUP Program.

    Reasons Statement: Your online application should include your rationale for graduate study and pursuit of a professional degree. Your reasons statement should reflect why you are interested in pursuing this particular program and how your career interests fit with the degree.
  2. Transcripts
    One official transcript sent directly to the Graduate School from each undergraduate and graduate school attended. If you attended UWM as an undergraduate, the Graduate School will obtain transcripts from the UWM Undergraduate Records Office.
  3. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) – General Test Scores: Institution Code 1473
    Allow at least one month for receipt of all scores. Visit the GRE website for more information about registration and preparation: Preferred scores: top 50%-ile for each category.


  1. Letters of Recommendation
    Three letters of recommendation from people familiar with your academic and/or professional work. Letters should be from non-related individuals who know you through previous academic programs or relevant professional activity. MUP recommendation form:

In addition to submission of GRE General Test Scores, a minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT or 600 PBT is required, or a score of 7.0 on the IELTS examination. Applicants with TOEFL scores from 79-99 iBT or 550-599 PBT, or an IELTS score of 6.5 will be considered for admission only with the stipulation that further course work in English be taken.
