Application Deadline: January 15 (fall admission) Begin the application process one year in advance.

Application to the Ph.D. Program requires a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (4.0 scale) and, a) M.Arch degree or master's degree in a related professional field; or, b) a master's degree in any field and significant experience in the practice, research or teaching of architecture or related professional field; or, c) a bachelor's degree in any other field.

SUBMIT TO UWM GRADUATE SCHOOL:

  1. Application, Reasons Statement and Fee
    Complete the UWM Graduate School application form on-line at: http://apply.wisconsin.edu.

    Reasons Statement: A 2-3 page statement that includes long-term goals, a summary of relevant work completed to date, likely area of specialization, and research interests. Address how your proposed program of study fits with faculty interest areas and indicate if you have contacted any faculty in this regard.
  2. Transcripts
    One official transcript sent directly to the Graduate School from each undergraduate and graduate school attended.
  3. Graduate Record Exam (GRE) – General Test Scores: Institution Code 1473
    Allow at least one month for receipt of all scores. Visit the GRE website for more information about registration and preparation: http://www.ets.org/gre. Preferred scores: top 50%-ile for each category.

SUBMIT TO UWM SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING, STUDENT ADVISING OFFICE:

  1. Letters of Recommendation
    Three letters of recommendation from persons in a position to assess your potential for advanced graduate research. Admission Recommendation Form: http://www4.uwm.edu/sarup/admissions/applying.cfm
  2. Resume, Curriculum Vitae, or Biographical Statement
    1-2 pages
  3. Portfolio
    Format: 8-1/2” x 11” maximum size (do not submit a digital portfolio, or loose/rolled materials). Portfolio must be bound with name clearly visible on outside cover. Include examples of professional work, design work, research, teaching, and/or work relevant to advanced graduate research.
  4. Reasons Statement
    A copy of the 2-3 page statement submitted to the Graduate School with your application.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
In addition to submission of GRE General Test Scores, a minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT or 600 PBT is required, or a score of 7.0 on the IELTS examination. Additional requirements for international applicants: http://www4.uwm.edu/cie/futurestudents/69/.
