Reasons Statement: A concise, 2-3 page statement that includes your long-term goals, a summary of relevant work completed to date, your research interests, and your likely area of specialization within SARUP's Doctoral Program. Specifically address how your proposed program of study shall fit with the interests of program faculty and indicate if you have contacted any faculty in this regard.
One official transcript sent directly to the Graduate School from each undergraduate and graduate school attended.

- Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation from persons in a position to assess your potential for advanced Graduate Research leading to a PhD.

- Resume, Curriculum Vitae, or Biographical Statement
1-2 pages total, including your Educational background, Work/Research experience, Publications/Projects completed and any Recognitions/Awards received.
- Reasons Statement
A copy of the 2-3 page statement submitted to the Graduate School with your application.
All applicants are required to submit an electronic portfolio. This portfolio should show evidence of your interest and aptitude towards Doctoral Studies (including a selection of design projects at your undergraduate/graduate institutions, any professional projects undertaken, and 2-3 written samples of research papers/projects – either completed or published). The portfolio should be carefully conceived, well designed, neatly prepared, and easily readable digitally. Please design your portfolio for digital review rather than submitting an electronic version of your printed portfolio. For successful submission, the portfolio:
- Must be no more than 10 MB. Any portfolio over 10 MB will not be accepted.
- Must be a pdf file. We do not accept any other file types.
- The portfolios will be reviewed digitally (it will not be printed); format your portfolio for view on a computer screen, and use a horizontal format in your design.
- Do not include photos of yourself, your CV/resume or your Social Security Number in the electronic portfolio.
- Include a cover page with your first and last name, and the program you are applying to (e.g., John Smith, PhD).
Submit Resume/CV, Reasons Statement and Portfolio as an email attachment to firstname.lastname@example.org. Subject line of email: “PhD Admissions.”
The SARUP Doctoral Committee is well aware that Internet access and speeds may be a limiting factor for some applicants. If you are unable to upload your PDF file, you may 1) send a paper copy by mail, or 2) send a DVD/CD with the electronic file to the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Student Advising Office (address below).
In addition to above requirements, a minimum TOEFL score of 100 iBT or 600 PBT, or a score of 7.0 on the IELTS.
