This course teaches you fundamental concepts, practices and competencies in child and youth care work. Child and youth care (also referred to as youth work) describes the practice of working with youth who face special risks and challenges. People who take this course often work with, or plan to work with, youth in community centers, after school programs, shelter facilities, group homes, residential treatment centers, juvenile detention facilities, or foster homes. Other people who take the course simply want to increase their understanding of children and youth. Although most of the content is focused on adolescence (youth), much of it is relevant to younger children as well.
The course has two major learning outcomes and six core competencies to prepare you to work in settings such as the ones above.
The learning outcomes are:
· An increased understanding of how youth (adolescents) build and shape themselves into the world through unique cultural, familial and communal experiences (stories)
· An increased capacity to engage in empowering interactions with youth
The competencies are:
· Listening
· Having empathy
· Being dependable and predictable
· Using understanding of self and boundaries to develop relationships with youth
· Selecting and implementing developmental activities
· Creating moments of connection, discovery and empowerment
