Advanced Mediation: Strengthening Communication Skills

Communication skills are vital for mediators. It is the indispensable tool we use to help people have a discussion where they can find a resolution to their concerns. Are your communication skills needing a tune up or fine tuning? This training is based on the premise that mediation is a conversation for understanding (and that you have completed a 40 hour mediation course). We will look at reducing judgment and defensiveness, attend to messages in the nonverbal communication, learn to develop helpful questions, and discuss how to focus the discussion without controlling it.
  Learning Goals:
  • Refresh or improve mediator listening and speaking skills;
  • Ideas for choosing effective interventions;
  • Self-assessment process of attending to the consequences of interventions.
