This seven week online course is one of four courses designed for people who work directly with youth in group and community based programs. The focus is on relational and developmental youth work as defined by national standards for knowledge and competent practice. Learning is grounded in the awareness that youth work occurs in relationships and activities that are designed to address the developmental needs and strengths of youth.

In weekly discussion groups and learning exercises, students learn from the instructor, each other, selected readings, and DVDs about four competencies based on the following statement: "Effective youth workers "show up" and are engaged with youth as they do the work." Course One begins with an overview of adolescence and what it means to be at risk then focuses on these four competencies:

• Being Present
• Listening
• Empathy
• Meaning Making
