Database Programming for the Web

 

In this hands-on course, you'll make use of open-source web development tools to learn best practices to make your front-end web pages interact with a back-end database.

This course can be taken individually or as part of the Web Certificate program.

Who Should Attend

Those interested in utilizing a database back-end to help build a dynamic web site or further interact with their web site visitors.

Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the course you will be able to:

  • Create a basic database
  • Write information to and query information from the database
  • Properly accept user submitted data as well as display data taken from the database to a web page

Course Outline/Topics

Topics Covered:

  • SQL basics including how to query a database using the SELECT statement and how to modify data with INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE
  • Database design concepts including database normalization and the use of primary and foreign keys to relate two tables
  • The use of a database abstraction layer to make your code more portable between database back-ends
  • Security principles to properly validate user data that is input through a web page
  • Learn common database field data types and when to use them

Prerequisites
Web Development core courses or equivalent experience. Knowledge of SQL, PHP and Web Design courses that include creating forms are helpful but not required.
