Systematic Approach to Increasing Transit Ridership

Public Transportation is a product…an important and integral part of our communities…but a product nonetheless.  Unless someone is willing to pay to use that product and does, in fact, pay the fare and get on the bus/van/taxi, there is not much point to providing the service!

Systematic Approach to Increasing Transit Ridership focuses your efforts on the most productive ways to get people on your service and to keep them riding once they try it. It is not just about marketing, but about taking a comprehensive step by step approach to service design and delivery, and ridership development.  It is about finding your “avatar” – your ideal customer and about building and maintaining relationships.

This course provides a comprehensive approach, backed by the latest in transit research, to build and maintain a strong ridership base.

Increasing Transit Ridership is divided into six key topics:

1) Focusing on your strengths;

2) Finding your avatar;

3) Building a positive image;

4) Getting your customers to take the first step;

5) Consistently delivering quality services;

6) Building and maintaining a relationship with your customer.

This course will be lead by Anita Gulotta-Connelly and Joseph Caruso.  Anita has over 30 years of experience in the transit industry.  She began her career in transit planning and also worked in transit operations and administration before becoming the Managing Director of the Milwaukee County Transit System.  She now provides transit consulting and life planning services through her firm, Horizon Consulting.

Caruso has nearly four decades of transit experience and is a nationally recognized leader in public transit marketing.  For over 28 years he served as the marketing director for the Milwaukee County Transit System.  Currently he is the senior consultant for Brecon Hill Consulting, focusing on strategic marketing and brand development.  He has taught for both UWM’s Center for Continuing Education and for the National Transit Institute.
