The UWM Writing Project, Teen Writing Academy: Poetry Gr. 9-12 New Class

This fun and imaginative genre-specific writing class focuses solely on poetry. Work closely with UWMWP instructors in small groups to learn advanced poetic concepts. Build, and possibly finish, a larger collection of poetry throughout the course.

  • Explore advanced poetry concepts including free verse, form and spoken word.
  • Receive additional individual instruction and response in small groups.
  • Read samples of poetic writing from contemporary and modern writers.
  • Learn writing practices and approaches used by professional poets.
  • Further cultivate a personal writing process from free writing to drafting, and editing to publishing.
  • Celebrate with a community event focused on performing poetry for a live audience!

The more general Teen Writing Academy is not a prerequisite, but you should have a basic understanding of poetic concepts, as you will be applying advanced writing strategies. We also highly encourage students to bring a collection of poetry that you have been working on.
