Teachers Professional Development Training

Measurable Academic Gains through Integrated Curriculum (MAGIC) for English Language Learners is a series of courses designed to assist K-12 educators in learning how content and language integration could enhance ELL students' learning. It also assists them in adapting theories and best practices in their classroom using a series of skill-building workshops, a Participatory Action Research (PAR) inquiry framework and applying the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards into their classrooms.

The course was developed and offered as a part of the MAGIC Project, a five year Professional Development initiative funded through the U.S. Department of Education. The series of courses employs a wide range of learning approaches including classroom participation, active reflective learning, presentations and written assignments.

The MAGIC for ELLs has two overarching goals:

1. To improve the learning outcomes of ELLs through the preparation of teachers in applying research-based instructional and assessment practices for ELLs.

2. To build a strong collaborative work culture between school and family that will develop the long-term capacity for change.

To accomplish these goals, MAGIC for ELLs employs the following strategies:

  • Cooperation, networking and capacity building among teachers, schools, families of ELLs to respond to educational needs of ALL students.
  • Best practice sharing between ESL instructors and regular content teachers, and mentors ensuring the success of ELLs.
  • Academic content and language integration to enhance language acquisition, language development and scaffolding instruction for ELLs.
  • Use of home and school “funds of knowledge” to enhance classroom teaching and learning practices.

The MAGIC for ELLs consists of three distinctive courses:

  • Integrated Curriculum And Training (ICAT)—participants discover theories and best practices for applying the WIDA English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards into academic content and language instruction. This enhances language acquisitions, language development and scaffolds instruction for the ELLs.
  • Participatory Action Research (PAR)—participants explore, implement and assess the integration of content, language and culture using both home and school Funds of Knowledge (FOK) to enhance classroom teaching and learning practices.
  • Mentoring & Coaching—participants are assigned one mentor and one coach to facilitate the learning, understanding, and application of the various topics in the classroom through the video observation model. Mentors and coaches work very closely with participants to supplement and/or expand gap in knowledge needed to accomplish the assignments.
