|No Need to Balk at the PMBOK® Guide – 5th Edition
By now you’ve probably heard that the standards from PMI® have been updated, the “PMBOK® Guide—Fifth Edition” has been released, and as of July 31, the certification examinations have been updated. But what does it all mean?
Well, as the profession of project management evolves, so must the standards. And in order to keep the tools and vocabulary of the industry consistent on an international level, we turn to “A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge” or the “PMBOK® Guide.” Compiled by both volunteer committees and the general public, the Guide is a reflection of organizational best practices within project, program and portfolio management.
The updates included in the latest release (the fifth edition), while not terribly dramatic, were made to enhance the organization, consistency and application of processes most notably:
While the changes represent the progression of project management, the foundations of the profession remain consistent. The UWM School of Continuing Education provides course and certificate options to fulfill your professional development requirements on any level.
- Added a new chapter, or knowledge area, for stakeholder management
- Moved some communication management processes, and added a few new ones
- Added three new planning processes to create management plans for scope, schedule and cost
- Made minor revisions to inputs, tools and techniques, and outputs throughout
- Improved various process definitions
All UWM Project Management courses will include the PMBOK5®
updates beginning fall 2013.
If you plan to take the new PMP® exam, you may be interested in registering for Implementing a Project Management Discipline/PMP® Exam Review. Our next session is December 11-13. This course will include all the changes in PMBOK5.
