Guide to Defining Business Requirements

Before beginning a project, it is critical that project managers fully understand business requirements. Here’s a checklist to help you define accurate requirements:

  1. Identify Challenges & Opportunity
    In other words, research the reasons a project exists and what issues will be addressed.

  2. Determine Outcomes
    Once you understand the project needs, it’s time to identify outcomes. What is the desired project result and steps to getting there?

  3. Gather Necessary Tools
    How will you reach project goals? Layout the tools, talent and budget needed to succeed.

  4. Justify Plans
    Now that you’ve planned your route to success, it’s essential you gain buy–in from key stakeholders. Outline necessary costs and how they will achieve bottom-line results.
