POLICIES OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES

STUDENTS WHO DO NOT ATTEND CLASS (including discussions) or contact the instructor during the first week of classes may be administratively dropped from the course.

Course prerequisites are enforced in lower division MATH & MTHSTAT courses (those numbered 299 and below). Students on waiting lists and students who attempt to add or change sections after Open Enrollment should be prepared to show proof of prerequisites in the first week of classes. Math advisors are available in the Department of Mathematical Sciences to help students with prerequisite verification problems. Students are encouraged to consult with them during the first week of classes.

MATH PLACEMENT LEVELS are used as prerequisites for many lower division math courses. For definition and more information on Math Placement Levels please see: http://uwm.edu/math/undergraduate/resources/math-placement/ The College of Letters & Science charges an additional special course fee for Distance Education (online) sections. These sections can be distinguished by a section number beginning with 2-- (e.g., 201, 202). MATH-92 : Mathematical Literacy for College Students I (0 units; U )

Introduction to numeracy, proportional reasoning, algebraic reasoning, and functions. Emphasis on developing conceptual and procedural tools that support the use of key mathematical concepts in context.

Notes:
Fee for 3 cr assessed; counts as 3 cr toward cr load for Financial Aid & enrollment verification. Not recommended for students planning to take Calculus or Chem 100. Prereq: none.

MATH-94 : Foundations of Elementary Mathematics (0 units; U )

Arithmetic, geometry, and beginning algebra; develops mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and facility with basic mathematical objects and their relationships. Individualized instruction via adaptive learning software.

Students learn a broad variety of fundamental logical methods - techniques used to identify, analyze, model, evaluate, and criticize different types of real-world reasoning.
