AGENDA Information Technology Policy Committee Meeting #3, Thursday, November 29, 2001 9:30-11:00 am Union E280 (Note change of room) Agenda is posted at http://www4.uwm.edu/secu/itpc/agendas.html 1. Minutes of Meeting #2 (automatic approval if there are no corrections). 2. Announcements 3. Meeting with Provost/Vice Chancellor John Wanat --The questions below have been submitted to VC Wanat prior to the meeting. 4. Meeting times for next semester 5. Discussion: should the ITPC set a fixed meeting time for future years? 6. Discussion: how to deal with policy documents submitted by the CIO or other committees. Specific instance: the policy being developed by I&MT concerning user IDs. 7. Other Business. QUESTIONS for the Vice Chancellor: I. The Role of the ITPC & the IT Review (a) How is implementation of the IT Review recommendations being handled? What is the role of the ITPC? What is the role of other groups, the Council on IT, the Faculty Senate, I&MT? Is there a need for a separate committee? (b) More generally, what is your view of the role of the ITPC in the UWM IT complex? II. Current campus IT projects (a) There's a great deal of discussion of a single campus calendar server. Is there any chance of bundling the implementation of a calendar with a single full-featured campus e-mail package for staff? This is an area of clear duplication of effort among units. Calendaring software often works together with e-mail packages and it seems easier to roll out one change, rather than two. (b) Should we also include a full-featured standard newsreader program in any e-mail/calendaring solution, and try to create a culture of using newsgroups for communication and announcements at UWM? (c) Are there plans to create a single campus standard for networking software, such as replacing Novell Netware with Microsoft software? III. Distance Education/Electronic delivery of courses: (a) What is the place of distance education/electronic delivery in UWM's pedagogic agenda? What procedures are in place or should be implemented for the development and review of such courses? Is there a single control point for these issues? How are we doing at UWM? Are we giving students what they want/need? (b) Where should faculty go for acquisitions for distance education/electronic delivery? Who will pay for the costs associated with these courses? [The CPC/EMPC last year passed a resolution that there should be adequate support for faculty acquisitions for distance education.] (c) Are the problems with Blackboard fixed for the foreseeable future? Are there any lessons to be learned from the problems? What has happened to students and faculty whose courses were disrupted by the Blackboard problems - did they get or do they deserve an apology or some recompense? Is Blackboard to be the main platform, or even the only supported platform, for electronic delivery of courses/content? IV. Resource Issues: (a) The CPC/EMPC passed a resolution last year calling for the creation of a central fund for purchase and maintenance of universal and certain specialty software, and asking that the ITPC develop policies for the use of this fund. Is there any progress on this? (b) The Milwaukee Idea has generated funds for new faculty and increased student enrollment. Do these funds include (adequate) support for IT & infrastructure costs? Can you give us some details? Will funds flow to the campus, to I&MT, or to individual units? What effect will the current state budget problems have on IT at UWM, old or new? (c) Where should resources to build and maintain labs, both general and special (departmental, unit) come from? Should departments be encouraged to turn over labs to the campus? If so, what form should that encouragement take? Are our lab facilities adequate for our current and future needs? (d) What resources are available for faculty and staff who wish to engage in electronic delivery of course content, from simple use of the web to completely online courses? Where should these resources come from, and are they adequate? Is the LTC the primary point of contact? ----------------------------------------------------------------- INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY POLICY COMMITTEE MEMBERS (2001-02) MEMBER DEPT/DIV.
