I CALL TO ORDER AND APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Jay Moore called the meeting to order at 1:35 pm.
Moore welcomed President Lyall on behalf of the University Committee and thanked her for her continued support of UW-Milwaukee. The members of the committee introduced themselves.
President Lyall spoke to the committee on several topics, including:
· Budget. She provided the committee with background on the Enrollment Management 21 plan for UW-System, specifically with the Milwaukee Idea as UWM’s contribution. Most of the 1.7% budget increase was ‘cost to continue’. She stressed that the state needs to reexamine its commitments and priorities. President Lyall also spoke to the Economic Stimulus Package in which UW-System’s goal is to ‘grow the income faster than the growth of taxes.’ She also informed the committee of the Joint Financial Committee meeting on Friday April 20th.
· Graduate Education/Research. Moore provided background to President Lyall on UWM’s commitment to Graduate Education/Research, specifically the University’s desire to maintain the integrity of being designated a ‘research university’. President Lyall spoke of other universities that provide non-resident tuition remissions. Also, some graduate programs are now free to students due to a reduction in enrollment. President Lyall informed the committee that of the 10 new programs at UWM, 7 are graduate programs. UW-System needs help from UWM in prioritizing the programs.
The meeting adjourned at 2:24 pm.
